Whether you’re a hardened triathlete, a repeat park run offender, yoga addict or spin junkie the Body Active treatment is the perfect antidote to your training whilst also enhancing the results of all your hard work.
Body Active claims to improve the body’s circulatory and metabolic processes making it the ultimate treatment to complement an active lifestyle, allowing you to get the absolute most out of your body, every workout. SOLD.
As soon as I heard about the new Body Active Treatment and product range I was excited. I’m one of those annoying I love exercise people, who overshares her exercise regime on instagram and bakes cakes with vegetables in, so the idea of ‘Body Active’ had me intrigued.
As with all of The Apothecary Urban Spa treatments, the Body Active experience began with a pre treatment consultation, during which my therapist talked me through the stages of the treatment, what to expect and the products used. I’m sure they’d call this housekeeping but for me it’s an anticipation builder, plus a chance to raise any red flags or concerns, for example I suffer with really sensitive shins (runner problems) so could warn her to avoid this area or approach with caution!
I don’t want to tell you too much about the treatment because I don’t want to ruin the magic of experiencing it for yourself but if I said nothing at all it wouldn’t make for a very compelling review…
“I would honestly pay just to let Devon do bad/good things to my muscles with a bamboo stick every week…“
The headlines include the application of a unique Body Mask made with Yellow Clay from Brazil and Plankton extract that targets metabolism and encourages firming paired with Tui-Na massage techniques which literally translates to “pinch and pull”. I almost felt as if she were pulling me apart and putting me back together, reshaping and remodelling me. The second and in my opinion most noteworthy element of the treatment is the use of a bamboo stick to devastatingly good effect, applying even, muscle melting pressure, to root out and relieve deep seated tension. If you’ve ever used a foam roller, you’ll be about 80% of the way to imagining how satisfying the relief is. But the kind of beautiful pain one can inflict on themselves using a foam roller compared with the effect when someone else is responsible for the pressure is what makes this treatment very special indeed. I had so looked forward to this part of the treatment and I was delighted it lived up to my expectations. I would honestly pay just to let Devon do bad/good things to my muscles with a bamboo stick every week.
My poison of choice is running and yoga, with the odd PT session thrown in for strength. I had this treatment pegged as the perfect post run perk so took myself out the day before for a run so I could really feel the benefits of a serious rub down. What I hadn’t expected was to climb off the table and want to lace up my trainers! I felt completely fired up, as though the muscles in my legs had been reset and were ready for a workout. I didn’t go for a run. I went home, drank plenty of water as instructed and took an early night secretly hoping the high would last until the morning. It did. I woke up keen as mustard to get out for a run and took myself off over some very wet fields for what I like to call a free run. I set no pace targets, no milage goals, I just let myself run for the fun of it. I felt totally comfortable for the duration, no muscle soreness, fatigue, annoying niggles, just right. So right in fact that I scored myself a 5km Personal Best, shaving 36 seconds off my previous record. Coincidence? I think not.
“Every single product they develop and treatment they choreograph has been done so with science at the heart of it. They don’t make it up, there’s no ‘winging it’, it’s all tried, tested and formulated to work.“
Whether you’re a hardened triathlete, a repeat park run offender, yoga addict or spin junkie the Body Active treatment is the perfect antidote to your training whilst also enhancing the results of all your hard work. I say that not just because I ran a PB after my treatment (did I mention that already) but because Comfort Zone are all about the science. Every single product they develop and treatment they choreograph has been done so with science at the heart of it. They don’t make it up, there’s no ‘winging it’, it’s all tried, tested and formulated to work.
For those of you who don’t consider yourselves ‘athletes’, first up who are you kidding? We all have it in us, medals do not make the (wo)man. Secondly, don’t write this treatment off as ‘not applicable.’ If you’re sat at a desk 8 hours out of 12, or on your feet all day, you’re bound to suffer tight hips, inactive glutes, muscle fatigue or all of the above. The Body Active treatment is designed not only to enhance the results of an active lifestyle but due to the vigorous nature of the massage along with the combination of Yellow Clay and Plankton, it stimulates your metabolism whilst reenergising your muscles, making it a true alternative to a workout!
It’s also worth mentioning that post treatment I have been using to great effect the complementary product range to really maximise the effects and benefits of the treatment.
The complete Fitness Assistant beauty routine collection includes a Booster, to be used before and during your workout in critical areas, a Shower Scrub for after your session, and a Body Cream to be used after every workout!
The Booster is an intensive treatment with a thermogenic action: it prepares muscles for sports activities and increases lipolysis during work-out. It works by generating heat and encouraging the mobilisation of fat molecules to increase energy making it a great tool for targeting critical areas with adipose accumulations*: abdomen, buttocks and knee area. If you’re imagining a Deep Heat sensation then fear not, I could go into detail about how the formula increases temperatures in hyperthermic areas but you’re definitely going to stop reading if I do, so I’ll just say that your skin heats up enough to trigger increased results, without any undesirable side affects such as skin irritation or itching. In fact I was so surprised with how little I noticed any sort of sensation after application the first time I used it that I applied extra just to make sure it would work!
*adipose accumulations? SAY WHAT? In normal person talk this basically means fat deposits. Whilst we all need a little in the right places to protect our vital organs, too much in the wrong places is linked to obesity.
t’s impossible for me to say for definite, without the help of a lab, that the Booster is working as described but I can hand on heart say that I have noticed an improvement in how long I can train for before my muscles begin to fatigue. I genuinely feel as though I have more energy to give and can run for longer before my legs begin to feel tired and heavy. Whether you’re a keen runner, cyclist or swimmer any increase in stamina, endurance, speed or strength is important, so as long as I continue to feel stronger using the Booster I will trust in the science and include it as part of my routine!

As for the post workout regime. Regardless of what the shower scrub is supposed to do, it smells great so I love it for that! The delicate natural aroma of Green Tea Leaves combines with the blend of essential oils of Mint, Eucalyptus, Sage and Rosemary in a base of Patchouli and Cedarwood chosen for their energising action on body and mind. Of course no post workout wash would be worth its salt if it didn’t offer an exfoliating action to help detoxify and cleanse after a sweaty session. Unlike a lot of scrubs this one foams so you can really work up a lather which makes me feel as though I don’t need to use a separate Body Wash.
Finally the Body Cream, designed to firm and remodel the skin, its ingredients counter the effect of free radicals produced when we exercise and work to improve skin elasticity. If you work out a lot a few things happen, yeah you feel good inside and out BUT you also have a lot of washing to do AND you shower ALL THE TIME. I constantly worry about the effects of showering so often and constantly washing away all the natural oils has on my skin, so a really nourishing body cream is important. With a naturally energising scent the Body Active Cream not only invigorates but also stimulates the production of collagen. Double win.
So there you have it. The world’s longest ever review, because there’s simply so much to say about this exciting new treatment and product range.
The takeaway from all of this should be that if you enjoy a relaxing and calming massage then don’t book the Body Active treatment, choose instead the Tranquility Pro Sleep or Hot Stone Bliss. If however you’re looking for something that is going to invigorate you, realign you, stimulate your muscles and improve physical performance, be that running after the kids or running after a personal best, then absolutely, 100%, book it right now. This treatment for me, is by far one of The Apothecary Urban Spa’s most exciting and one that I think will speak to both male and female clients very well. My advice, book one for either after a heavy session or the day before something big to really put it to the test and see the effects.
See you on the start line.
